Tribal Animals group by Hexephra Tribal Animals group by Hexephra
This is the reason I've not uploaded anything in a while... because I was super duper busy doing all of these! These tribal animal patterns are for all my lovely friends in my residence for Christmas. I asked each person for their favourite animal and whipped out my tablet...

There are a ton of them, ne? I had a pretty good production rate of about two a day for quite a while, then kind of missed a day and tumbled... but I was nearly done by then, so I managed to finish in good time.

I think I've become quite a bit better at these designs now. I have a better idea of animal anatomy, for one thing, and I'm understanding how to follow the masses of the body with the shapes I make. And I've more or less mastered the pen tool, I hope.

I find that I have, in fact, used several different styles within this group of animals. Some are more jagged; some are more swirly. Some are quite simple, but I like them that way.

Commentary by animal, because I'm cool and ranty like that! From left to right and top to bottom.

Kangaroos are awesome. I enjoyed making the patter on the manta ray's back. The chihuahua's fur got in the way of making neat lines, but I figured it out. I tried to make a fiery pattern for the phoenix and a swirly one for the butterfly, which was originally going to be a monarch but then I decided that was too easy/boring. The hedgehog was the first one I did and it has cool hair. I had to find a good pose so that the panda didn't get lost in the white bits. I like the flowy simplicity of the springer spaniel. The standing giraffe was pretty easy to do. I had to find a pose for the koala that didn't have it gripping a tree because it was too difficult to figure out the claws. The bear has a flat head because it was a polar bear cub. I love the poses some cats make. The wolf's chest area evaded me for so long I thought I'd gotten into a slump. The sitting giraffe was a bit harder to do, but eventually worked out. I had fun with the front paws of the retriever. The leaping dolphin has a heart on its head! The big bear was quite fun to do too. The straight dolphin has a nice sense of action. The prairie dog is so fat! I think the fox has my favourite pose. Lol platypuses (platypi?).

Overall I had a really great time with these, but now I'm tired of doing them and will take a long break before doing another one. There are lots of interesting animals I'd like to try someday, but not today. Phew! I think my favourite part of these was coming up with shapes for the faces. I especially liked giving some of them mask-like shapes, framing the eyes and sometimes the nose.

It sounds interesting, but don't you think it would be better to make your own art to give them? It'd be more special that way.

It doesn't matter! The most important thing is that you tried, and I'm sure they look wonderful and your grandparents will be happy with whatever you make. And if you keep working at it you'll improve!

These are so well done, I love the uniqueness behind each one of them.
Would you ever consider trying to make one of a Red Panda?

Thank you! I'm glad you like them. :) A red panda might be interesting. I'd have to take a better look at the animal to know what kinds of patterns I'd be able to do though.
